Hi, I'm Kelsey Mays for Cars.com and we're at the New York Auto Show. That is the Hyundai Genesis Sedan introduced earlier this year.
This is the Hyundai Genesis Coupe introduced at the show Already, you can see that there aren't a lot of differences between the two. They share the same rear wheel drive chassis. While the Sedan is a VA Lexus fighter, the Coupe is what Hyundai calls a new attainable benchmark in 300 horsepower two-door cars. To that end, the Coupe offers two different engines. There's a four cylinder turbocharged engine that makes about 212 horsepower. The 3.8 liter V6 makes 306 horsepower. That's big league numbers in the neighborhood of a Nissan, 350 Z or even an Infiniti G37. With premium fuel Hyundai says both engines will make a little bit more power as well. Now, along the sides of Genesis has some of the lines of the current Tiburon Coupe, which is Hyundai's front wheel drive, sporty car. We like the headlights and the taillights. They remind us of a much more expensive cars like the G37. One downmarket thing is sort of the front grill and the lower air dam. They're just all black. They look a little bit plain to us. The wheels definitely don't look plain. These are 19-inch Twin Spoke wheels. They've got this sort of smoked out design. You can see the Brembo brake calipers underneath. That's definitely a very sporty up-market look. Now, hop it in and you'll definitely find a pretty respectable interior. These bucket seats definitely fit your form. They've got sort of prominent side bolsters, but they don't really lock you in too much. So you don't feel too confined. The quality of the buttons here along the window switches, and the buttons along the steering wheel. Very nice, very high quality. Fit and finish is good as well. Steering wheel close out. Very good. Same with the glove compartment, which closes out there. No gaps at all. Couple things we aren't crazy about: the fact that the center controls have a lot of silver plastic along them. Some of the cars have this. In the sunlight, sometimes these controls can get really washed out. Now this car comes with a stick or an automatic. This car has the manual. It has short, confident throws. That's pretty promising. Another promising feature is, some of the high-end features here. You've got one-touch power up and down windows and a one-touch open and shutting center. That's nice. Another nice thing is the woven headliner. Pretty high-quality details here. This is definitely the Hyundai we've come to know and like in the last couple of years, not the Hyundai you probably remember from the 1990s. On the press materials, Hyundai compares the Genesis to various front wheel drive sport groups. All the way up to rear wheel drive cars, like the G37. What makes or breaks that argument is how this car drives. We don't know yet, but we'll be sure to let you know, once we find out. <v Announcer>For additional information on this car or any other go to Cars.com, and our blog KickingTires.
