(upbeat music) Hi, I'm Kelsey Mays for Cars.com. These days, the auto industry may seem awash in small cars with shopping cart dimensions and fuel sipping 4-cylinder engines.
Performance fans may feel like they've been marginalized, and torque seems to have gone the way of Pontiac, or has it? Fortunately, we have cars like the all new Chevrolet SS, a big rear drive sedan with a proper V8, and we're at the 2013 New York International Auto Show giving you a closer look. The SS slots above the Impala in terms of performance and price, it's essentially a next generation VF Commodore from General Motor's Australian Holden division. There's one engine under the hood, it's a 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8, 415 horsepower, 415 pounds feet of torque, and it drives the rear wheels through a paddle shifting 6-speed automatic. 19 inch wheels come with Bridgestone high-performance tires, there are also Brembo brakes, and a sports suspension on the SS. GM says the hood and the trunk are both aluminum instead of steel that saves 30% weight relative to steel, and overall weight distribution is roughly 50/50, GM says, which should help with handling. Let's take a look at the inside. Tons of standard features in the SS, including things like leather seats, push button start, a Bose stereo, Chevrolet's MyLink multimedia system, and a first for Chevy, automatic parking system. This is the first rear drive performance sedan from Chevrolet since the 1996 Impala SS, it actually shares underpinnings with the Camaro, as well as the Caprice police car. Maybe you can use that fact to help you make friends with the officer's pulling you over. Like the G8, the SS isn't expected to be a huge seller, but it could help Chevrolet's performance draw among enthusiasts whose spouses threatened divorce if they buy a Camaro. Start saving up money, the SS goes on sale this summer. (car engine revving)
