(trunk slamming) (upbeat music) (brakes squealing) And probably the wildest production car at the Detroit Auto Show is the all new Ford GT, a car that reprises a super car that was around for just a couple model years last decade.
Continues to pay a tribute to the GT40, a race car from the 1960s. Like the GT40, like the earlier GT, this GT looks exactly like a race car. The fact that it's street legal seems almost incidental. Let's take it all in. Lots of carbon fiber construction for the GT, which is a mid-engine rear wheel drive layout here. Now there's a lot of ventilation upfront, but I want to point out sort of some of the duct work and things going along the side here. You notice that the car kind of narrows as you're coming back beyond these sort of upwardly hinge doors here. You see a lot of cars that have some duct work that allows air to kind of flow along the side, over the rear. This takes it to a whole other level. Look at these kinds of extrusions here, which connect this giant rear fender all the way to the roof. Air kind of flows out through here. Again, as the teardrop sort of narrows toward the end, it comes into this giant rear spoiler here. This is adjustable for both height and tilt, Ford says. Every part of this exterior, according to the automaker, was created to improve down force, to increase aerodynamics, which should help braking and handling and overall stability. I gotta say, it's really a sight to behold. Inside, you see a lot of that carbon fiber going on in the interior. Not a lot of other parts inside that are really familiar at all to any other Ford vehicles. This is a very different looking car on the inside. Note the steering wheel. There's a lot of buttons along it. It's inspired by a Formula 1 steering wheel. Removes any stocks along the side. So everything like turn signals, wipers, all of that stuff is on the steering wheel itself to create unencumbered access to those giant paddle shifters for the seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The seats, sports seats. They're not adjustable, Ford says. Instead they're in a very fixed, rigid position here, but you can fit drivers of multiple sizes in, thanks to adjustable pedals and an adjustable steering wheel. Now some of those mechanicals include massive carbon ceramic brakes or race inspired active suspension. Oh, and that engine back there, it's an EcoBoost V6. That means it's turbocharged. Ford says it has more than 600 horsepower, the most of any EcoBoost engine so far. And thanks to all of that carbon fiber, this has one of the best power to weight ratios of any production car out there right now, according to Ford. All of that should improve and really affect drivability in a good way. So, we'll have more to report once we get a chance behind the wheel, closer to the GT's on sale date in late 2016.
