(upbeat music) Hi, I'm Dave Thomas of Cars.com. We're going to look at Chrysler's MyGIG infotainment system which is available as an option on many of its models.
When you hear a company use a name like MyGIG, it doesn't make a lot of sense right away, but basically what it is, it's a 20 gig hard drive, put in the dash of your car and it uses an LCD screen to go through navigation, music and you can even put pictures on it all through a USB plug here. So we took some songs off our own PC, downloaded illegally, put them on a flash drive and all you have to do is plug the flash drive right into the USB plug. You can see it's flashing red. It knows at that the MyGIG is acknowledged it. Pick my music, import music files, from USB and the magic starts working. Now another kind of bonus feature of the MyGIG is you can actually put photos, personal photos in the system and they display them alongside your radio settings or your map. So again, we took a photo, put it on a flash drive. Again, you just insert it. Instead this time, you put my pictures, add a picture from the USB and it's done. So another way you can download music to the hard drive is you can just pop in a CD into the system and it'll download it right away. Now, the one problem we've discovered is this system is a, Chrysler has teamed with a company that does this and comes up with a database of songs. So it'll recognize what the CD is. Supposedly, know who the artist is, the titles, and just transfer that information over. Unfortunately, I've gone through about a dozen discs here and it hasn't picked up one of them correctly. It hasn't displayed any information. So when you record it, it comes in as unknown artists tracks one through 12 or however many there are. Chrysler says that the database is about four months out of date. From, I guess, it's just delivery time and whatever but to have, you know, again, we tried a number of disks. None of them work. So that's kind of frustrating. One of the better features of the MyGIG system has nothing to do with the hard drive at all. It's actually the navigation system. It uses a 3D map. It also has a 2D version, but the 3D is much better looking. It's easier to see. The zoom works really well. It's all touch screen, so that's great. We don't like systems that have moved away from the touch screen to things like knobs to move stuff around. So touch screens the way to go. Chrysler's really nailed that down. One other feature that MyGIG has that no other car has right now, anyway, is satellite TV from Sirius. So you get a subscription plan just like you would to Sirius Satellite Radio but it's for satellite TV. And right now there's about three channels and they're mostly, they're all family oriented and you can actually view it while in park upfront. And in this system, the rear entertainment system as well. It's actually a pretty good quality. Well, the MyGIG system has some features that we're not too fond of. For the price, it's in this car, $1,500 along with a number of other upgrades, like speakers. But for that kind of price it's basically what a navigation upgrade is in other cars. So if you have to get navigation, that's one of your must haves. It really does come in at a good price and a good value and has lots of other cool things to it. But if you just want all the fun stuff and don't care about navigation, it really could find better options. <v Spokesman>For more car related news, go to cars.com or our blog KickingTires.
