10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: Lexus GX 550 Keeps Jeep Wagoneer, GMC Hummer EV in Tow

With a full decade and a half between full redesigns, you’d hope the newly overhauled-for-2024 Lexus GX 550 would get it right. Well … it did. Big time. The redesign capitalizes on what was working in the already-excellent GX and then improves on it, boasting luxury, technology and capability on-road, off-road and with-load. But that’s not to say this full-size luxury SUV is above reproach (is anything, after all?), and you can get both sides of the story in the most popular Cars.com news article of the past week, a rapid-fire roundup of the 2024 GX’s pros and cons.

Burnishing its sterling reputation are its off-road capability, with standard full-time four-wheel drive and generous ground clearance, as well as a host of asphalt-eschewing goodies on the Overtrail trim; a lushly appointed interior with plenty of additionally indulgent options available; a 9,096-pound towing capacity at its beefiest; increased dimensions that increase occupant airspace inside; and a substantially quicker, more powerful and more efficient twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Tarnishing its record are a hefty 500-pound weight gain over the outgoing model, which feels unnecessarily cumbersome, in addition to a 6% price hike to start at $64,250 (including a destination charge) on its way to a spendy $81,250 at the top of the range.
