Chrysler parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 17,000 of the brand’s Pacifica Hybrid minivans due to a battery defect that may cause a fire even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-22 Pacifica Hybrids. Certain high-voltage battery packs may fail internally, leading to thermal runaway and increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Chrysler is advising owners not to charge their vehicles and to park them outside away from structures until repairs are completed.

To resolve the issue, dealers will update battery-control module software and inspect and replace battery packs, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 23, but those with further questions can contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403 (the automaker’s number for this recall is 52D), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
