Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a panel of experts announced today that by 2030 New York City will be so overpopulated that the infrastructure won’t be able to supply enough electricity or housing for its residents. To add insult to injury, bumper-to-bumper rush-hour traffic will last all day long.
Not only would car traffic be abysmal, mass transit would also be stretched beyond its current limits. One of the panel’s suggestions — called congestion pricing — would tax vehicles going to Manhattan’s most heavily trafficked areas. We have no idea how that would work — tolls? — but there isn’t a lot of room to build new roads in the city. Does anyone else have a better idea? Perhaps employers in NYC will have to allow more telecommuting.
