2007 Jeep Compass: First Drive

Jeep, an automaker known for building go-anywhere off-roaders, moves into the car-based SUV segment with its new Compass. I had the opportunity to briefly drive the Compass at DaimlerChrysler’s Chelsea Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Mich. Here are some first impressions.

The Compass doesn’t ride like your typical Jeep, and that’s because it’s not — it’s related to Dodge’s small Caliber hatchback. The Compass’ suspension tuning lends it a nice balance between ride comfort and body-roll control. The front seats are comfortable, and are surprisingly good at holding the driver in place during hard cornering thanks to their large side bolsters.

Performance from the 172-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder is adequate, though it sounds quite buzzy when pushed hard. The Compass Limited 4×4 model I drove had a continuously variable transmission with an AutoStick clutchless-manual mode that gives the driver manual control of the CVT’s operation. While the clutchless-manual modes of many conventional automatic transmissions provide somewhat lackluster response, this one delivered impressively quick “shifts” that can make for a more engaging driving experience; well done, Jeep.

Fellow cars.com writer Kelsey Mays managed to get some seat time in a five-speed manual Compass and reports that the shifter had a good feel to it, but had somewhat long throws. The clutch’s engagement was vague, too.

A number of interesting interior features are offered, including speakers in the liftgate that fold out for outdoor entertaining, a combination flashlight/dome light in the rear cargo area and reclining rear seatbacks. The gauges are especially legible, too.

All in all, the Compass has a lot going for it, especially considering its attractive base price of $15,985, but I think if anything’s going to be its undoing, it will be its styling — it looks like a bloated AMC Gremlin.
