2019 BMW M850i Convertible Video: Driving in the Lap of Luxury

Big, expensive German luxury coupes are a beautiful thing; they’re stylish, packed with all the latest technology, and they can eat up highway mile after highway mile in easy comfort. Driving the M850i convertible is an exercise in cushy, comfortable grand-touring style.

Is not a sports car — it’s too heavy and too isolated for that description, even with the “M” designation that BMW has added to let you know that this is a sportier version. No, the M850i is more about being seen and enjoying the voyage than circling your favorite road course on a track day. Load up yourself and a friend, drop the top and go enjoy a canyon road at dusk on the way to dinner on the coast.

You’ll have plenty of power from the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine. It makes 523 horsepower and amazing sounds from its dual exhaust pipes. The power gets sent to all four wheels through a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, and the car rockets from zero-to-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, according to BMW. In a straight line, it’s wonderful, with plenty of power and throttle response that entices you to stab the accelerator frequently — the engine is pretty much the highlight of the M850i.
