The Mazda CX-5 compact SUV seats five and offers a choice of two four-cylinder engines: a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a newly available 227-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Both engines work with a six-speed automatic transmission, and front- and all-wheel-drive models are offered. The CX-5 competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. Mazda has announced a new diesel engine for the 2020 CX-5.

The CX-5 delivers an above-average driving experience thanks to excellent steering and handling and a responsive drivetrain. Its quiet interior and cabin materials are also noteworthy. Where it comes up short versus the competition is in overall interior space. The CX-5 is a strong entrant in the compact SUV class, but the competition is good, too, as we found in our 2019 Compact SUV Challenge.
