The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named Audi’s all-electric hatchback, the E-Tron Sportback, a 2020 Top Safety Pick Plus, the crash-safety advocacy organization’s highest designation.
The hatchback earned requisite good scores in all of the agency’s crash tests: driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints and seat tests.
The E-Tron Sportback’s standard LED headlights also earned the top score of good, while its standard automatic emergency braking system earned the top rating of superior. IIHS said that, in the 12-mph vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test, the system reduced the car’s speed by 11 mph; in the 25-mph test, the vehicle avoided the collision entirely.
IIHS toughened its Top Safety Pick Plus and Top Safety Pick requirements for 2020. Both awards require good or acceptable grades (out of good, acceptable, marginal or poor) in nighttime headlight effectiveness, and well-rated lights must be standard on all trims for a car to earn Top Safety Pick Plus. Vehicles that have well-rated headlights in some models but marginal- or poor-rated ones in others can earn a Top Safety Pick but not the prestigious Plus.
The 2020 E-Tron Sportback joins the A6 and A6 Allroad on the list of model-year 2020 IIHS-honored Audi models, as well as the 2019 Audi E-Tron SUV, which in 2019 was the first electric vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick Plus award.
