2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB: A Baby Benz With a Postadolescent Price

Mercedes-Benz is fleshing out its alphabet soup of an SUV lineup with the new-for-2020 GLB. It slides into a tiny hole in the automaker’s SUV lineup between the GLA and GLC in both size and price. When the new model goes on sale, it’ll start at $37,595 in front-wheel-drive configuration and $39,595 with all-wheel drive (all prices include a $995 destination charge).

That puts it above the GLA250’s $35,245 base price and below the GLC300’s entry point of $43,495. The GLB stands out from its siblings, however, because it offers something those five-seaters don’t: the flexibility of an optional two-seat third row.
The sole powertrain is a 221-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 258 pounds-feet of torque and channeling power through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Standards include the MBUX multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen and “Hey, Mercedes!” voice-activated assistance, as well as a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, LED headlamps and 18-inch wheels. Available features include a color head-up display and navigation with augmented video.
Mercedes says an assortment of safety and semi-autonomous driver-assistance technology is available, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a front collision system, lane keep assist with lane change assist and a park assist system — but the automaker did not indicate which systems would be standard for U.S. shoppers.
Competitor compact SUVs that offer a third row are a small group. They include the Land Rover Discovery — which is a little bigger and starts at $53,325 — and the Volkswagen Tiguan, which is smaller and starts at $25,290.
The all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB will go on sale in the U.S. by the end of 2019.
