Porsche might be a late arrival to the SUV coupe game, but it isn’t showing up empty-handed. The 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe has added another variant, the Cayenne S Coupe, which will slot in between the Cayenne Coupe and the Cayenne Turbo Coupe.
Here’s what you need to know about the newly unveiled Porsche SUV:
1. It Aims for the Performance Sweet Spot
Having driven the base Cayenne and wished for a bit more engine to make it come alive at times, I think the addition of the Cayenne S is a good move for the coupe versions of the SUV, as well. The twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 will crank out 434 horsepower and 405 pounds-feet of torque, which puts it right between the base Cayenne Coupe (335 hp) and the Cayenne Turbo Coupe (541 hp).
The Cayenne S Coupe will be plenty quick, with a 4.7-second zero-to-60-mph time (which drops to 4.6 seconds with the addition of a Lightweight Sport Package) and a top speed of 164 mph.
2. Lower Roof Lowers Cabin and Cargo Space
The tapered roofline reduces cargo area to 22 cubic feet behind the backseat from 27.1 cubic feet in the regular Cayenne S. Speaking of the backseat, Porsche had to lower it by 1.18 inches to account for the sloping roof and still provide passengers with enough headroom. The Cayenne S Coupe comes as a 2+2 by default with seating for up to four, but Porsche says a three-seat rear bench is also available as a no-cost option.
3. Coupe Comes at a Cost
The base trim level of the Cayenne Coupe cost about $10,000 more than the original Cayenne, but the difference for the Cayenne S Coupe won’t be as pronounced. It starts at $89,850 (including a $1,250 destination charge), which is $5,800 more than regular Cayenne S. That extra price does include a bump up in standard equipment, featuring the Sport Chrono Package, 20-inch wheels, sport seats and a panoramic moonroof.
The 2020 Cayenne S Coupe joins the rest of the Coupes going on sale in the fall, but Porsche has already opened up preorders for interested buyers.
