Despite their enthusiastic embrace of hybrid technology early on, Toyota and its Lexus subsidiary have been slow to take further steps in electrification. Change is afoot now, with the swoopy plug-in Prius Prime and electric bZ4X in Toyota showrooms and the all-electric RZ 450e and, now, new RX 450h+ for Lexus.

The plug-in version of Lexus’s bestselling hybrid SUV has been a long time coming, but now that it’s here, the specs are competitive. Lexus estimates the RX 450h+ is capable of 35 miles of all-electric driving and an 83 mpg-equivalent combined rating. The gas-burning half of the equation is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine shared with the NX compact SUV. Lexus says the RX 450h+ can be fully charged in about 2.5 hours at 240 volts with the standard 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger.

For other content, the RX 450h+ comes standard in the Luxury trim level that sits atop the rest of the RX lineup (apart from F Sport models). It rides on 21-inch wheels and features a panoramic moonroof, perforated semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, a 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display and navigation that can anticipate a loss of signal and download maps in advance.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 also is standard on the RX 450h+. This safety bundle includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure steering assist and adaptive cruise control.

The 2024 Lexus RX 450h+ will go on sale in late 2023, with a base price (including destination) of $70,080.
