As one of the first, longest-running and bestselling hybrids in the U.S., the Toyota Prius has become colloquial shorthand for hybrids in general. It’s still one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale today, and the efficient but ugly duckling finally blossomed into a swan with its redesign for the 2023 model year. The plug-in Prius Prime builds on the regular Prius’ credentials by adding a larger battery pack and a more powerful electric motor for up to 44 miles of pure electric range. For 2024, the compact PHEV’s base price creeps up just $325 from 2023.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Toyota isn’t making any major changes to the Prius Prime for the 2024 model year. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 150 horsepower and 139 pounds-feet of torque is paired with two electric motors for a total system output of 220 hp. The motors get their juice from a 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The regular Prius is available with all-wheel drive, but the Prime is front-drive only.

While the base SE trim level is rated for 44 miles of electric range before the gas engine fires up, according to Toyota, larger wheels and heavier curb weights from more features drop the official estimate to 39 miles for the XSE and XSE Premium trims. Though official 2024 figures are not yet available, the 2023 SE is rated by the EPA at 52 mpg combined and 127 mpg-equivalent combined, while the XSEs get 48 mpg and 114 mpg-e.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard

All Prius Primes include the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety and driver-assist tech as standard equipment. This suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane departure steering assist, adaptive cruise control, active lane-centering steering assist, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams. While not part of the bundle, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard across the Prius Prime line. The XSE adds front and rear parking sensors, and an Advanced Technology package is available on the XSE Premium and includes a 360-degree camera system and automated parking.
