This sleek, five-seat compact hatchback hybrid gets down the road courtesy of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s coupled with an electric motor and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Total output is 194 horsepower with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional and bumps that figure to 196 hp. Though the Prius is somewhat in a class of its own, it competes with more traditional compact hybrid sedans, including the Honda Civic Hybrid, Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and Toyota’s own Corolla Hybrid.
Also available is a Prius Prime plug-in hybrid version, which comes only with front-wheel drive. It also has a 2.0 four-cylinder engine, but pairs it with a dual-motor hybrid setup that makes a total of 220 hp and is EPA-rated to deliver up to 45 miles of electric-only range and 52 mpg combined. The Prius remains a terrific value thanks to its affordable price, outstanding fuel economy, and many standard comfort and driver-assist features. The Prius has always delivered excellent fuel economy, and this holds true with the fifth-generation model: In FWD LE trim, the Prius earns an EPA-estimated 57 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The Prius Prime costs significantly more, but it delivers admirable electric-only driving range and zippier acceleration. The 2023 redesign gave the Prius an unexpectedly sexy, stylish attitude, but it also made the car much less practical as an everyday commuter: Cargo room, occupant space and ergonomics are all compromised by its uber-rakish profile.
