98,000-Plus VW ID.4 EVs Recalled for Doors Opening Unexpectedly
Volkswagen is recalling more than 98,800 examples of its ID.4 electric SUV over an issue that could cause the vehicle’s doors to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, the automaker has issued a stop-sale and halted production on the vehicle until further notice.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-24 ID.4 EVs. The vehicles may have door handles that did not meet factory specifications for protection against water. As a result, water may enter into the circuit board and cause the door lock to malfunction, leading to the doors opening unexpectedly; this increases the risk of injury.
To fix the issue, a VW representative told Cars.com in an email that though a remedy is not yet in place, “it will most likely involve door handle replacement and a software check.” The automaker will notify owners Nov. 1, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-893-5298 (VW’s number for this recall is 57J9), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
