BMW M5 Concept: First Look

It’s close to a year since the re-engineered and redesigned BMW 5 Series went on sale in the U.S. While the new 5 Series has proven to be a hit — we found the new model to be quiet, comfortable and less awkward looking than its predecessor — performance junkies are still waiting for the fifth-generation M5.

They won’t have to wait too much longer if the BMW M5 concept is any indication. This thinly veiled concept shows that BMW is bringing its green efforts to even its high-performance M Series.

The most important part of any M has always been the powertrain. The M5 concept bears a new twin turbocharged V-8 engine, which BMW says will be 25% more fuel efficient than its predecessor. However, no specific power ratings were given. The 2009 M5 returned a combined city/highway rating of 13 mpg.

Part of that efficiency gain will come from a new auto start-stop feature, currently found on the 3 and 1 Series. The V-8 will be mated to a seven-speed double-clutch automatic transmission, which will power the rear wheels. The model will benefit from a longer wheelbase (3 inches) and wider track than its predecessor. The brakes and steering are also M-specific.

Besides powertrain configurations, M-specific exterior upgrades include a lower ride height, larger front air intakes and blacked-out honeycomb grille, a small trunklid spoiler and integrated rear diffuser. The M5 concept comes with 20-inch black-colored double-spoke light alloy wheels and dual exhaust. BMW didn’t reveal the interior, but expect Alcantara simulated suede upholstery, more bolstered seats and aluminum trim, like in other M vehicles.

While BMW didn’t reveal a specific launch date for the model, it does say the concept will closely match the production vehicle. The car will be officially unveiled at the 2011 Shanghai auto show two weeks from now.
