2027 BMW M2 Adds Optional AWD and Mandatory Neck-Snapping Launches
What Shoppers Should Know

Regardless of door count and transmission type, all products under the umbrella of BMW’s vaunted M division cut a clear balance between performance and usability, with usable trunks, backseats and a full interior. This even applies to the M2, the most focused and compromised of the lineup, which BMW has made even friendlier for 2027 with optional all-wheel drive.

Yes, the long holdout is over — the M2 goes AWD. Well, optionally at least, serving as an addition to the lineup rather than any replacement. There’s not much to “understand” here, and there wasn’t much engineering on BMW’s side, either. The step-down-but-still-spicy M240i scoots around with available xDrive backing the similar 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine.
I imagine porting over the xDrive hardware was no biggie, as was the decision to keep this new variant automatic-only. The new M2 xDrive is available exclusively with the excellent eight-speed ZF-sourced automatic transmission, a sensible decision considering the overwhelming majority of enthusiasts picking the manual transmission would also default to the rear-wheel-drive configuration.
How Much Power Does the 2027 BMW M2 Make?
The same S58 zips out the familiar 473 horsepower and 443 pounds-feet of torque, routed to all wheels via a trick Active M differential that, aside from seamlessly routing power for max traction, allows for complete decoupling into a complete RWD mode with the stability control deactivated. Your smoky drifts are right where you left ‘em.
Straightline performance is improved, cutting the 0-60 mph scramble down to 3.6 seconds, a 0.3-second cut from the RWD automatic M2. This moderate improvement is expected given the xDrive’s 121-pound weight penalty, now cracking the scales at an impressively portly 3,988 pounds. Top speed remains 155 mph or 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package. Everything else from the adaptive suspension, big brakes, wheels, interior kit and options list (sans manual, of course) remains untouched from 2026.
How Much Does the 2027 BMW M2 With xDrive Cost?
Adding that xDrive badge will cost you, but not much in context. The 2027 BMW M2 xDrive starts at $74,950 (including $1,350 destination fee), some $4,600 more than the automatic, RWD 2026 M2. Note I specified “2026” for the RWD car; we’re not yet privy to pricing on the rest of the 2027 M2 model lineup. Expect a slight bump across the board to slightly reduce that price differential.
