On Friday, we reported that the Cash for Clunkers program had gone through nearly half its funds. In the four days since then — one being a Sunday, when some states don’t allow car sales — the number of cars turned in has increased from 338,659 to 411,624. Using our handy calculator, that’s 72,965 cars in four days. The total cash paid out is $1.717 billion.
The program has $3 billion total, allowing for roughly 750,000 car sales. At this rate (18,241 cars a day) the program will run out of funds in 18.5 days.
