EDAG unveiled its Open-Source Light Car concept at the 2009 Geneva auto show, a vehicle most notable for a rear screen that displays safety information for the benefit of the vehicle BEHIND it.

The vehicle uses organic LED technology for both custom exterior lighting and the screen, which displays information about how hard the car is braking, how fast it’s traveling and possible obstructions in the road ahead, like construction, speed zones or pedestrian crossings.

Other features worthy of mention include in-wheel motors that create more interior space, and a fully recyclable chassis made of basalt fiber rather than aluminum or carbon fiber, which are both heavier and cost more.

Still, the big innovation is the rear screen. We have to ask, though: Is that too much information to be taking in while trying to concentrate on your own driving? Plus, would it do enough to prevent the fender benders that could lead to huge repair costs? Let us know what you think in the comments.
