When Ford unveiled the 2024 Mustang lineup in September, the company detailed all the engines that will be on hand but conveniently left out performance numbers. With Christmas fast approaching, Ford gives pony car enthusiasts an early present with the unveiling of official power figures for the entire 2024 Mustang family.
The range-topping Dark Horse serves as the pinnacle of non-Shelby performance, and Ford has now confirmed it’ll make 500 horsepower and 418 pounds-feet of torque. The Dark Horse’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine benefits from upgrades including strengthened camshafts, forged connecting rods and a rebalanced crankshaft. The Dark Horse is the second most powerful naturally aspirated Mustang ever built, outshone only by the discontinued Shelby GT350 and its 5.2-liter V-8.
The standard GT is not too far behind with its 5.0-liter V-8 producing 480 hp — 30 horses more than the 2023 GT. An optional dual exhaust system makes for a total of 486 hp and allows you to select either a loud or neighborhood-friendly quiet mode. Both the Dark Horse and GT can be equipped with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional 10-speed automatic.
Engineers made minor tweaks to the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. It’s now rated at 315 hp (up 5 hp), with torque remaining at 350 pounds-feet. Unlike the V-8, the EcoBoost comes only with the 10-speed automatic. The active exhaust system is also optional on EcoBoost models, but Ford didn’t say whether it adds extra power to the four-cylinder or not.
The automaker also didn’t reveal fuel economy figures for the V-8 models, but it did say the horsepower and torque numbers are achieved using premium fuel. The automaker also is aiming to have the EcoBoost achieve an EPA-estimated 22/34/26 mpg city/highway/combined.
