Not to be outdone by parent automaker Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 all-electric SUV, Genesis is pressing on the gas (er accelerator) pedal in its electrification efforts. The luxury brand has announced important updates for its own upcoming electric vehicles, the electric-only GV60 and the all-electric version of the GV70.

Parallel to the 2022 New York International Auto Show, Genesis revealed its new electrified coupe concept, as well as the ordering process for its first production EV, the GV60. The brand also confirmed that production for the larger GV70 EV will commence later this year.

Limited GV60 Orders Now Available

Shoppers in select U.S. markets, including California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York (states where the GV60 will only be sold, initially), can now order the GV60. A new program called Priority One allows qualified shoppers to place their orders on the brand’s website by providing their contact information and a $500 deposit; a Genesis Concierge service personalizes the ordering process by finding the shopper a qualified dealer.

The GV60 rides on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, but it shares more visual cues with its GV70 and GV80 stablemates. Inside, the SUV gets an open layout with a floating console, slim cockpit and flat floor. The vehicle will come with standard rear-wheel drive or optional dual-motor all-wheel drive and a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack. AWD models get a maximum 429 horsepower and an estimated 248-mile maximum range, according to Genesis’ website.

GV70 EV Production Begins in December

The GV70 EV will follow the GV60 into the U.S. market, and it won’t have to travel far when it does: Genesis says that the electrified version of the compact GV70 SUV will be the first to be built in the U.S., with production expected to begin in December at the automaker’s Montgomery, Ala., manufacturing facility.

The dual-motor AWD electric GV70 resembles its gas-powered counterpart apart from a faux grille that hides the SUV’s charging port and the lack of exhaust tailpipes. Inside, the GV70 sports eco-friendly materials, and a 14.5-inch multimedia touchscreen display, 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a shift-by-wire system dial in the center console are carried over from the standard GV70. Although U.S. specs are still under wraps, the global version of the EV is expected to reach a maximum of 483 hp and offer a “Boost Mode” to achieve 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Genesis announced the electric SUV news alongside the reveal of its new concept vehicle, the X Speedium Coupe. As a second iteration of the X concept, the coupe wears familiar styling elements like the brand’s two-line lighting and crest-shaped grille. Genesis notes that the new concept isn’t a preview of a specific production model but instead serves as a design exercise for its aggressive electrification plans. The brand aims to transition to all EVs by 2030 and offer six distinct models by the same benchmark.
