Going Small on EVs: Volvo Teases All-Electric EX30 SUV

Shoppers looking for a small, all-electric SUV will have one more option to consider come June: the Volvo EX30. The automaker has teased the new small SUV in a short video that announces its upcoming reveal, but most details remain under wraps for now.  The EX30 will follow the three-row 2024 EX90 SUV as Volvo continues on its roadmap to electrify all upcoming models and phase out gas engines entirely by 2030.

Currently, Volvo offers a pair of two-row all-electric SUVs, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, and the EX90 is expected to arrive in early 2024. While the EX30 will slot under the EX90 in the lineup, it’s unclear how it will compare to the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge — or whether it will eventually replace either of these vehicles. Volvo’s 30-second clip teases the SUV’s pixelated lighting first seen in the EX90’s headlight design, an evolution of the brand’s signature “Thor’s hammer” design; in the EX30, it appears to form a light bar across the SUV’s front end.

Although the video gives a quick look inside the cabin, we can’t confirm if the smaller SUV share’s the EX90’s minimalist driver cockpit and dual-screen setup with no physical controls. However, it’s likely that the EX30 will come with Google’s Built-In operating system, as it does in the EX90 and other Volvo vehicles.

Additional details, such as powertrain, performance and range estimates, also have yet to be shared. More information is expected leading up to the EX30’s June 7 reveal, when shoppers will be able to start placing reservations for the electric vehicle.
