What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The 2027 Ford Explorer is a three-row mid-size SUV.
  • Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free technology is available on most trim levels.
  • Pricing starts at $40,475, including the destination charge.

One of the origins of the species, the 2027 Ford Explorer is a family-friendly three-row SUV that still manages to distinguish itself from the hordes of competitors it helped inspire. Dating to the 2020 model year, the current generation is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform instead of the front-wheel-drive architectures most of its rivals are based upon. Like many vehicles in its class, the Explorer is available in an off-road-focused trim level, but unlike most, it offers an on-road performance trim, as well.

What’s Changed for 2027?

For 2027, Explorer buyers get one year of coverage with the Ford Security Package, which includes remote vehicle monitoring with ignition lock-out, as well as theft alerts and tracking. The services can be activated beyond the one-year window at purchase. Ford is also making more options available elsewhere in the lineup. A panoramic moonroof is now optional on every trim level, while Tremor buyers can now add the Sun and Sound Package (a panoramic moonroof, massaging front seats and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system) that was previously only available on the ST. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that is standard in the ST and optional in the Tremor is now also available in the Platinum, bundled with the Ultimate Package that includes exclusive 21-inch wheels and upgraded upholstery. Explorer ST buyers can add the Sinister Package, which includes black wheels and badging, as well as amber daytime running lights.

Fuel Economy

The 2027 Explorer’s standard engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque. A twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 is optional on the Tremor and Platinum and standard on the Explorer ST. It makes 385 hp and 415 pounds-feet. Both engines are backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard, and 4WD is optional with either engine and on every trim level except the Tremor, which is exclusively available with 4WD.

Interior Features

A six-seat layout with second-row captain’s chairs is standard in every trim level of the Explorer. A second-row bench that ups the occupant count to seven is optional in every trim except the Tremor. Even the entry-level Explorer boasts a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and tri-zone automatic climate control. It also gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as six speakers. Exterior features include 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED head- and taillights, a power liftgate, and keyless entry and start.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is also standard on the 2027 Explorer. This safety suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering assist, blind spot intervention with trailer coverage, front and rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-attention monitor, automatic high beams and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.

The ST-Line sports the look of the Explorer ST, but without the performance upgrades or attendant price premium. It gets 20-inch wheels, black and dark-chrome exterior trim, LED signature lighting, and a black cloth interior with synthetic leather inserts and red stitching. Beyond the appearance stuff, the ST-Line also adds a second-row climate-control panel, a power front-passenger seat, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and additional safety tech. Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 adds a 360-degree camera system and front parking sensors; Ford’s hands-free BlueCruise is optional.

The Tremor is aimed at Explorer buyers who are interested in taking their SUV off the beaten path. It features black 18-inch wheels wearing all-terrain tires, front and rear tow hooks, and underbody protection to prevent damage to critical components. The Tremor also gets a few luxury upgrades, namely synthetic leather upholstery with synthetic suede inserts, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated second row.

The ST boasts a standard twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with a quad-outlet exhaust, a sport-tuned suspension and 21-inch wheels in addition to the dark exterior treatment it shares with the ST-Line. It gets the same cabin upgrades as the Tremor, plus a heated steering wheel, a power folding third-row seat, shift paddles, ambient lighting and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

At the top of the Explorer lineup, the Platinum features BlueCruise, unique 20-inch wheels, satin-chrome and silver exterior trim, adaptive headlights that turn with the steering wheel, perforated synthetic leather upholstery, massaging front seats and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Versus the Competition

Despite its RWD layout being more commonly associated with premium-brand SUVs, the Explorer has a lower base price than many mainstream competitors. Its turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder also returns better fuel economy than most — although the Ford, unlike many vehicles in its class, does not offer a hybrid powertrain.
