What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The 2027 Lexus RX is a mid-size luxury SUV available with a gas engine as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
  • The gas-only RX 350 is the only one available with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid and PHEV.
  • Pricing starts at $55,450 for the RX 350; the hybrid lineup opens at $57,750 (including destination).

Widely considered the nameplate that launched the whole luxury crossover class, the Lexus RX is a five-seat mid-size SUV that remains the platonic ideal of its segment and one of the bestselling luxury SUVs in the country. The 2027 Lexus RX boasts an unusually diverse powertrain portfolio consisting of a gas-only turbocharged engine, naturally aspirated and turbocharged hybrids, and a plug-in hybrid. No matter how it’s powered, though, the RX is a comfortable and cosseting SUV.

The only change to the RX over 2026 is red brake calipers, which become optional on the F Sport Handling and F Sport Performance trim levels.

Fuel Economy

Lexus offers the RX a range of powertrains all based around similarly sized four-cylinder engines. The RX 350 packs a 275-horsepower, turbo 2.4-liter engine that makes 317 pounds-feet of torque. The hybrid RX 350h gets a larger, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder; with a pair of electric motors, combined output is 246 hp and 233 pounds-feet. In the RX 500h, the turbo 2.4-liter is teamed with the hybrid equipment for totals of 366 hp and 406 pounds-feet. The RX 450h+ is a PHEV with an estimated 38 miles of electric range. Here, the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter and stouter electric motors than the RX 350h’s combine to produce 304 hp.

RX models with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder (350 and 450h+) have a continuously variable automatic transmission. Those with the turbo 2.4-liter (350h and 500h) get traditional automatics. The RX 350 has an eight-speed and the 500h a six-speed. The RX 350 is the only one available with FWD; AWD is standard with the other three powertrains. (Note that all figures below are Lexus estimates; official EPA figures are not yet available.)

Interior Features

Lexus builds the 2027 RX in six different trim levels — Premium, Premium+, Luxury, F Sport Design, F Sport Handling and F Sport Performance — but what trim levels are available depends on the powertrain you choose. The RX 350 is offered in Premium, Premium+, Luxury and F Sport Design trims with either FWD or AWD, as well as the AWD F Sport Handling. The hybrid RX 350h is available in Premium, Premium+, Luxury and F Sport Design trims. The RX 500h can be had in just a single form, F Sport Performance. The plug-in RX 450h+ is available in Premium and Luxury trim levels.

Each trim level includes the same equipment regardless of powertrain. The Premium features 19-inch alloy wheels, a moonroof and power liftgate. Even this entry-level trim coddles occupants with synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel with a power tilt/telescoping steering column, and ambient lighting. Cabin tech includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 9.8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging and a 12-speaker sound system.

To that, the Premium+ adds 21-inch wheels, genuine leather upholstery, a 14-inch touchscreen with navigation, and upgraded ambient lighting. The most indulgent RX, the Luxury trim, includes a panoramic moonroof, triple-beam LED headlights, semi-aniline leather, power-adjustable and heated outboard rear seats, and a head-up display.

The F Sport lineup roughly parallels the regular RX trim-level hierarchy. All wear aggressive front and rear bumpers, as well as black finishes on their wheels, grilles, mirrors and roof rails. Other than its black 21-inch wheels, the F Sport Design is equipped the same as the Premium.

Apply the F Sport Design appearance kit to the Premium+ and you’ve roughed in the F Sport Handling. The only thing it’s missing from the Premium+ is the 14-inch touchscreen (which is available as an option). The Handling bit of the name refers to its standard adaptive dampers. The F Sport Handling also gets a head-up display.

Exclusive to the high-output 500h hybrid powertrain, the F Sport Performance builds on the Handling trim with upgraded brakes and matte-black 21-inch wheels. Most of the goodies from the Luxury trim are standard on the F Sport Performance, and what isn’t standard is available.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard on every 2027 Lexus RX and includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, emergency steering assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams. Also standard across the lineup are blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.

A 360-degree camera system is optional on every trim level. A head-up display is optional on the Premium+, and automatic parking is available on the Premium+, Luxury, F Sport Handling and F Sport Performance.

Versus the Competition

While many of its rivals pursue performance and driving engagement, the Lexus RX sticks with its proven formula of comfort and efficiency, bettering most competitors in fuel economy for a relatively attainable price. Even the high-output RX 500h F Sport Performance burns less gas than most vehicles in the class.
