What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The Subaru BRZ is a budget sports car with rear-wheel drive and a standard manual transmission.
  • 2.4-liter flat-four engine makes 228 horsepower, returns up to 25 mpg
  • Pricing starts at $37,385 (all prices include destination).

Along with its mechanical twin, the Toyota GR86, the 2027 Subaru BRZ remains one of few vehicles to challenge the Mazda MX-5 Miata in the affordable-sports-car arena. (The reborn Honda Prelude sort of joins the fray this year, although it is front-wheel drive and positioned more as a grand tourer.)

What’s New

Little changes on the BRZ for 2027. Subaru installed a new camera for the little coupe’s EyeSight safety suite, and the more focused tS trim level now includes rear parking sensors.

Release Date and Pricing

The 2027 Subaru BRZ will go on sale this fall. The entry-level Limited trim starts at $37,385 and the tS at $40,015. (Both prices include the $1,245 destination charge.)

Standard and Optional Features

EyeSight is standard on the 2027 BRZ. Subaru’s safety suite includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert.

The entry-level Limited trim rides on matte-gray 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer performance tires and boasts a standard Torsen limited-slip differential. Inside, it gets heated front seats with red contrast stitching, aluminum pedals, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, an eight-speaker sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The tS further hones the BRZ’s deft handling with Hitachi dampers and Brembo brakes featuring larger rotors and gold-painted calipers front and rear. It also gets metallic-finish wheels, adaptive headlights that turn with the steering wheel and rear parking sensors. To distinguish its cabin from the Limited’s, the tS gets blue accents and contrast stitching instead of the base car’s red.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Every BRZ is powered by a 2.4-liter flat-four engine making 228 hp and 184 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic is optional for $850 on the Limited trim level. Exclusively RWD, the BRZ is EPA-rated at 20/27/22 mpg city/highway/combined with the manual transmission and 21/30/25 mpg with the automatic.

Versus Competitors

The 2027 BRZ has a higher starting price than its Toyota twin and their benchmark MX-5 Miata, but it also includes more standard equipment. It’s more in line with their mid-level Premium and Club trims, respectively. Even compared to those, the Subaru carries a premium, but a smaller one of $2,000 to $3,000. Honda’s reborn Prelude carries the heaviest price tag of the bunch, but it is very well equipped, and its hybrid powertrain eclipses the other cars here with a combined 44 mpg.
