The Subaru Impreza is an appealing five-door hatchback that gets more appealing in its base trim for 2027 thanks to a nearly $2,000 price drop. As a hatchback, it has a roomy cargo area, and as a Subaru, it comes standard with the all-weather security of AWD. The price drop makes it one of the more affordable cars on the market, especially with AWD.

Pricing

The 2027 Impreza will arrive at dealerships later in the year. Pricing (including $1,245 destination fee) is as follows for the base and RS trims:

• Base: $25,840
• RS: $30,740

What’s Changed for 2027?

For 2027, Subaru eliminates the Sport model and replaces it with a base variant that costs almost $2,000 less. Subaru also drops the 152-horsepower base engine, making that price drop even better. Subaru says it has also improved the interior materials, specifically with updated stitching on the center console and revised door-panel materials.

Fuel Economy

Every 2027 Impreza draws its power from a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that makes 180 hp and 178 pounds-feet of torque. AWD comes standard, and the lone transmission is a continuously variable automatic with a manual mode that simulates eight gears chosen via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A wireless phone charger also becomes standard in the RS trim. The Impreza is EPA-rated at 26/33/29 mpg city/highway combined.

Standard or Optional Features

Every Impreza gets Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver-assist features that includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane departure steering assist and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering steering. Also standard are automatic high-beam LED headlights that point into turns. An All-Weather Package for the RS trim comes with blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert and emergency lane departure steering assist.

The new base trim comes standard with cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, dual 7-inch touchscreens (the top for infotainment controls and the bottom for climate and vehicle controls), wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a four-month satellite radio trial and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The RS upgrades to RS cloth upholstery, a single 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charger, foglights, a roof spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels. A five-year trial of MySubaru Connected Companion is also standard for the RS; it has SOS emergency notification, collision notification, vehicle condition check and other connected features. Buyers can also get three- or five-year plans of MySubaru Connected Services Companion+, which unlocks such features as remote engine start with climate preconditioning, remote lock and unlock, curfew and boundary alerts, and more.

The All-Weather Package also has heated front seats, heated mirrors and a windshield-wiper de-icer. Another $2,070 package for the RS includes a 10-speaker, 432-watt Harman Kardon sound system, a power moonroof and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support.

Versus the Competition

The Impreza’s direct competitors are limited by its hatchback body style. Most rivals with hatchbacks offer sedan versions, as well, and some rivals also offer hybrid powertrains. The Impreza has just the one engine and the hatchback body style; the WRX, which is based on the Impreza, is a sedan, but it’s a more expensive performance vehicle.

The two leaders in the class are the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, both of which have hybrids and sedans, as well. The Civic commands more money than other compact hatchbacks, and it gets even more expensive as a hybrid, but all versions appeal for dynamics and overall refinement. The Corolla is the fuel-economy leader in the group with its gas-only powertrain, but its hybrid variant is only offered for the sedan. The Kia K4 lacks power with its base engine, but a turbocharged option addresses that issue. The Mazda3 is stylish, has good power from its base engine and offers AWD.
