LEDs — light-emitting diodes — are nothing new to the automotive world. A number of models feature LED taillights, but the bright, tiny lights could soon be moving up to the all-important headlight. The Lexus LS460 hybrid — on the way in 2007 — will feature LED headlights, and both the Audi A8 and upcoming R8 supercar sport LED daytime running lights.

LEDs are more expensive than even the pricey HID headlights found on many luxury cars, but they use less energy and can last 10 times longer than ordinary lamps. Eventually, the price of the lights will come down and LEDs will be the norm. Until then, we’ll keep an eye on the intriguing designs the small lights allow on high-end models.
