Mazda CX-5, CX-9 and Mazda6 Get Carbon Editions for 2021

Mazda is expanding its carbon footprint — but not in a way that’s going to upset the EPA. The automaker is adding Carbon Editions to the CX-5 and CX-9 SUVs, as well as the Mazda6 sedan, for the 2021 model year.

All three special editions feature Polymetal Gray paint, black-finished alloy wheels and gloss-black mirrors. Inside, the Carbon Editions get black honeycomb trim and red leather upholstery, plus heated seats and Bose-brand premium audio. Technologies for the Carbon Edition include “most of Mazda’s i-Activsense” suite, the automaker said. Among those are a blind spot warning system, adaptive cruise control down to a stop and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
It wasn’t immediately clear where the Carbon Editions will stack up among each vehicle’s trim levels. The CX-5, CX-9 and Mazda6 offer leather upholstery at varying points — it comes in three out of five CX-5 trims and three out of four CX-9 trims, but only two out of five Mazda6 trims — so the Carbon Edition could slot anywhere from mid-level to top of the line. Still, it’s hard to fathom Mazda putting something new atop its newish, range-topping Signature trims.
Pricing and specific features for Carbon Editions of the CX-5, CX-9 and Mazda6 will come closer to each respective nameplate’s model-year 2021 announcement, Mazda said. It’s unclear when all three hit dealerships, but you may have to sneak through Jabba the Hutt’s palace at night and turn a couple switches to unfreeze them first … no, wait … those would be the carbonite editions.
