New 800-Volt Electrical System Comprehensively Upgrades 2026 Volvo EX90

Key Points:
- Volvo is upgrading its all-electric EX90 SUV to an 800-volt electrical system for the 2026 model year.
- The 2026 EX90 also gets new driver-assist and safety tech.
- 2025 EX90 owners can upgrade their vehicle to 2026 spec at their local dealership.
Volvo just launched the EX90 for the 2025 model year, but the electric three-row SUV is already getting a major upgrade for 2026: A new 800-volt electrical system replaces the previous 400-volt setup. The 800-volt system allows for faster charging (Volvo claims the 2026 EX90 can add up to 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes), as well as more power, quicker acceleration and improved efficiency.

Volvo has not yet released any official specifications for the updated EX90, but as a baseline, the 2025 model offered two dual-motor powertrains, with the entry-level version producing a total of 402 horsepower and 568 pounds-feet of torque and the Performance variant rated at 510 hp and 671 pounds-feet; range for both is EPA-estimated at up to 310 miles. The automaker says the 2026 EX90’s motors and battery are lighter than the 2025 model’s.

Upgraded Tech and a Bone for Early Adopters
Volvo also improved the 2026 EX90’s core computer, upgrading it to enable enhanced safety and driver-support features. Park Pilot automated parallel parking is now available, and the electric vehicle’s emergency steering assist can now help avoid road hazards even in the dark. The EX90’s upgraded computer system also gains connected safety alerts that can warn the driver of slippery roads, accidents and other upcoming hazards, and the new Emergency Stop Assist can safely bring the electric SUV to a stop in its lane in situations where the driver is unresponsive.
Swapping out batteries and motors is prohibitively complicated and expensive, but jilted buyers of the 2025 EX90 can console themselves with a free upgrade at their dealership that will at least bring their core computer — if not their powertrain — up to 2026 spec. Volvo will release full details and specifications on the 2026 EX90 at a later date.
