Key Points

  • The 2026 Rogue Plug-in Hybrid is Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid.
  • Up to 38 miles of electric range
  • 248 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive

The Nissan Leaf was the first mainstream electric vehicle to be sold in the U.S. in the modern era, but the brand is only now gearing up to launch its first plug-in hybrid. The 2026 Rogue Plug-In Hybrid is based on the brand’s runaway bestseller, the Rogue SUV, and will enter into a segment where numerous competitors (and one notable collaborator) already have PHEV options. Those who pay close attention to small SUVs might find that the 2026 Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid’s specs sound a little familiar: three rows with seating for seven, 248 hp and an electric range of 38 miles.

Those readers might also then see the Rogue PHEV and think it looks a little off. It’s not unattractive in the least, it just doesn’t look like a Rogue. That’s because, while the Rogue forms the basis for the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Rogue PHEV is simply a rebadged Outlander PHEV. The Nissan has black and body-color trim where the Mitsubishi wears chrome and silver, but otherwise, the two plug-in hybrid SUVs only differ in their wheels, grilles and badging. Inside, even the distinctive, stubby shifter carries over from the Outlander PHEV to the Rogue PHEV.

Plug-In Details

We don’t say that with any judgment; the Outlander PHEV is an appealing overall package with some solid strengths — its smooth powertrain and comfortable, spacious interior among them. The 2026 Rogue PHEV borrows the Outlander PHEV’s powertrain, which combines a 2.4-liter gas engine with a pair of electric motors fed by a 20-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It gets standard AWD, and total system output is 248 hp and 332 pounds-feet of torque. The plug-in’s manufacturer-estimated 25/27/26 mpg city/highway/combined fuel economy with the gas engine running trails the equivalent gas-only AWD EPA-rated 28/35/31 mpg, but Nissan says the plug-in is quicker than its gas-only sibling.

Like the Outlander PHEV, the Rogue PHEV has EV, Save and Charge powertrain modes that allow the driver to control how the different parts of the hybrid system interact. EV mode is self-explanatory, Save mode maintains the current battery level, and Charge uses the gas engine to replenish the battery for upcoming EV deployment. There are also two levels of regenerative braking, including one-pedal driving.

A Premium Offering

The 2026 Rogue Plug-In Hybrid will only be offered in the regular Rogue’s two top trim levels: SL and Platinum. Both feature a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, lane departure warning, blind spot intervention, rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree parking camera, a driver attention monitor and road-sign recognition.

Riding on black 20-inch wheels, the SL also boasts keyless entry and starting, full LED exterior lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, windshield-wiper de-icers and a hands-free power liftgate. In addition to second-row seats that adjust fore and aft and recline, the cabin features synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heat pump, which controls temperature more efficiently than a regular climate control system. Standard tech includes a head-up display, six speakers, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen with navigation, wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.

To that, the Platinum adds a panoramic moonroof, genuine leather upholstery, a power passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, tri-zone automatic climate control and a nine-speaker Bose sound system.

Release Date and Pricing

Nissan says the 2026 Rogue Plug-In Hybrid will go on sale in early 2026. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but we expect it to remain similar to the Outlander PHEV’s base price in the low-$40,000 range.
