Nissan has released the second video in its three-part series teasing the next-generation Leaf EV. While the first video covered aerodynamic improvements and general characteristics of the battery and charging system, Leaf Part Deux gives some hints about the vehicle’s electric motor and platform.

Space and Efficiency

Powering the 2026 Leaf is an all-new powertrain that combines the motor, inverter and gearing into a single unit that’s 10% smaller than the motor in the outgoing Leaf in addition to being quieter and smoother. Nissan says it will make up to 214 horsepower and 261 pounds-feet of torque, equaling the most powerful motor available in the outgoing Leaf but generating 11 more pounds-feet.

The tidier drive unit frees up space under the new Leaf’s hood for the climate-control system, which was tucked behind the dash in the previous car; Nissan says this contributes to a more open cabin.

Chief Vehicle Engineer Hiroki Isobe says, “The top priority for our engineering team was optimizing thermal management and never wasting energy.” To this end, the Leaf employs a liquid-cooled battery and uses heat produced by the onboard charger to warm the battery up. Nissan’s Vice President of Global Strategy, Richard Candler, promises “significantly improved efficiency” compared to the previous-generation Leaf.

Stiffer Structure and Refined Handling

At the back of the new car, a more sophisticated multilink rear suspension replaces the outgoing Leaf’s torsion beam, contributing to a 66% increase in lateral stiffness. Combined with a more rigid body structure, this is said to result in improved ride quality and maneuverability.

Watch for more on the redesigned Leaf, with the next video likely to drop later this week or at the beginning of the next.
