OnStar Adding Live Directions to Nav Systems
When GM rolled out turn-by-turn directions for navigation-less models, we were impressed with the thrifty idea even if the execution wasn’t pretty. Now the company is making the obvious leap to adding live operator-provided directions to models equipped with factory-installed navigation systems.
Yep, using Destination Download you’ll be able to call an OnStar operator and get them to send directions to your navigation screen instead of having to type them in yourself.
If you own a navigation system you know this is the most annoying and distracting part of using it, especially while moving. Most cars won’t even allow for new inputs while the car is in motion. This new feature will only be available on 2009 models and beyond. Starting early this summer, 22 new GM models will have the option available, which is roughly 80% of GM’s lineup.
OnStar is also adding a service called eNav that allows owners to send MapQuest directions straight from their PC to their car’s OnStar system. This will roll out retroactively in cars already equipped with the Turn-by-Turn system in mid-May. Later this year it’ll be added to the Destination Download system.
We’re really pleased to see these features added to OnStar. They may even be enough to warrant the $28.90 monthly, or $299 per year, Direction & Connection package’s fee. However, many nav system buyers enjoy the fact that they just pay once and don’t have any monthly fees. Let us know if you think these new figures are worth the cost.
