Recall Alert: 2008-2011 Mazda Tribute
Vehicles Affected: About 33,000 model-year 2008-11 Mazda Tribute crossovers manufactured between Oct. 5, 2006, and Sept. 11, 2010.
The Problem: A steering torque sensor may not be able to properly detect driver steering input, causing the system to remove the electric power-steering assist; if this happens, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. In May, Ford announced the recall of about 740,000 model-year 2008-11 versions of the Escape and Mercury Mariner, which are both related to the Tribute, for the same power-steering problem.
The Fix: Mazda will notify owners beginning in July, and dealers will update the software for the power-steering control module and the instrument cluster module for free. If a vehicle shows a history of loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the power-steering control module when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced.
