Just months after a recall over a loose steering knuckle retention fastener, Rivian is recalling its R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck again. This time, improperly deploying front-passenger airbags are the culprit, and more than 12,700 vehicles are affected.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2022 examples of the R1S and R1T. A faulty automatic locking retractor sensor located in the front-passenger seat belt may report being on when it’s actually off, potentially preventing the airbag from deploying or causing it to deploy improperly. An improperly deployed airbag can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Dealers will inspect and replace the front-passenger seat belt system components, as necessary, for free. Rivian will begin notifying owners April 8; those with further questions can contact the automaker at 888-748-4261 (Rivian’s number for this recall is FSAM-1166), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
