CARS.COM — Subaru is at it again teasing a BRZ STI, a version that could take the 2017 Subaru BRZ up a notch in the performance department. On Twitter, Subaru previewed a massive STI-branded, park-bench-sized wing mounted to the back of a BRZ and said, “Stay tuned…6/8/17. #STI”
This isn’t the first BRZ STI concept. Subaru released a BRZ STI concept when the BRZ debuted in 2011 and again in 2015. That first BRZ STI concept had a mix of aerodynamic, suspension and brake upgrades including a front splitter, rear diffuser and large wing. The revisit in 2015 was a concept toying with the idea to expand the STI brand to accessory parts, STI-tuned cars and motorsports. The tease included suspension, braking, chassis, aerodynamic and performance upgrades. Under the hood of the 2015 concept was a turbocharged four-cylinder borrowed from a Subaru BRZ racecar.
Our guess is that the BRZ STI will be a mix of the two and without the turbocharged engine, much like the limited-edition Subaru BRZ tS previously available in Japan that featured a barrage of STI-engineered parts: wheels, brakes, rear suspension, shocks and springs, front and rear aero pieces, and more. Set your phone reminders now for June 8 to check back in and see what Subaru has in store.
