Few auto executives have the power to raise eyebrows with a single tweet like Elon Musk. The CEO of California-based Tesla Motors has used Twitter to do everything from foreshadowing the debut of the Model X SUV to cryptically teasing the supercar-quick Model S P85D. Now, Musk says he’s going to end range anxiety for all Model S cars on the road, and we’ll hear more about it on Thursday.
“Tesla press conf [sic] at 9am on Thurs.,” Musk tweeted on Sunday. “About to end range anxiety … via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet.”
OTA refers to over-the-air, which is how Tesla applies software updates to its tech-laden Model S. The all-electric car, which comes in several battery capacities, has an EPA range of 208 to 270 miles, depending on the trim. That’s well past the range of other EVs, but so for the most part is the Model S’ starting price: more than $71,000 before tax credits.
What will the update include? Stay tuned; we’ll find out on Thursday morning.
