Today, the first workday traffic backups were felt, and the resident New Yorkers weren’t so happy about these pedestrian malls.
“To cut off five blocks of traffic in the busiest intersection in the world so people can sit on folding chairs doesn’t make a whole lot of sense,” a New York real estate agent mused.
“I have been driving in the city for 30 years, and this is a disaster,” an HVAC technician said.
The oddest part about the closure is definitely the tourism aspect. While visitors are getting a rare chance to walk — and sit — in the middle of the street, they also can’t get to the famed area easily. Taxi cab drivers could be dropping tourists off several blocks from where they need to go.
