The companies expect the Department of Energy to award them a $693,750 grant, which will cover half of the project’s estimated $1.39 million cost.

The project would serve not only as a pilot program for the first wave of drivers who purchase plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles, but also help the utility conglomerate assess the impact those vehicles have on the grid. Maybe Boston will be the first U.S. city to sell GM’s PUMA?
