Video Review: 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe

For years now, German brands have been playing kind of fast and loose with the idea of what is actually a coupe. In our minds, coupes are two-door vehicles, but a lot of the German brands have said, “Naw, coupes can also be four-door vehicles” — like the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which we got a good look at during the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Now, let’s get one thing straight: It is not a longer, larger version of the AMG GT two-door. It actually sits on a completely different platform; underneath, the four-door coupe shares more in common with the E63 wagon. Now you may be saying to yourself, “Wait a minute, if this thing really is more E63 wagon than AMG GT two-door, where do they get off calling it a coupe?”

Well, we think there are a couple of qualifications you have to have in order to really be called a coupe. Does the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe have ’em? Watch the video above from our on-the-scene coverage of the New York auto show, and we’ll determine once and for all whether this thing makes the grade as a proper sports coupe -— or whether it’s just a sedan with a confusing name.
