First of all, there are a lot of people who are allergic to chrome and develop an unpleasant rash if they come into contact with it. Second, eliminating chrome from a car’s interior does not mean simply yanking a few accents from the dash. Apparently, chrome is also found in leather seats.
Chromium is used in the leather-tanning process, which makes leather interiors a pretty dicey purchase for car buyers with a chrome allergy. From now on, Volvo will use a natural or synthetic chrome replacement for tanning its leather, which — as an added bonus — is better for the environment anyway.
