The Kia Seltos SX rode its model-year 2024 updates to a second consecutive win in a comparison test of affordable SUVs.

To find the best compact SUV for 2023, we tested six models: the refreshed Ford Escape, the redesigned Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, the redesigned Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50 and the Nissan Rogue.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue’s strengths resulted in five outright or shared first-place category finishes: driver-assist tech, in-cabin storage, quietness, vehicle user interface and visibility.

Our judges’ opinions account for a large portion of determining a contestant’s score for best compact SUV, but depending on the class, we also include objective scoring categories.

Since our last comparison for best compact SUV in 2019, two of our competitors — the Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Rogue — have been fully redesigned and 2019’s winner, the Volkswagen Tiguan, has been updated.

Redesigned for 2021, the Nissan Rogue dethroned the two-time champion Volkswagen Tiguan in our test to find the best compact SUV.
