Expert 2003 Chevrolet S-10 review

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Chevrolet’s compact pickup truck sees only a handful of changes for the 2003 model year, including a new fuel-injection system for its 4.3-liter V-6 engine. The seats and door panels get new cloth trim. During the 2002 model year, a Flame/Heat decal was added to the Xtreme models and a ZR5 Sport Appearance Package became available for the Crew Cab trucks.

Two-wheel-drive (2WD) models may be equipped with either a four-cylinder engine or the 4.3-liter V-6, while four-wheel-drive (4WD) trucks come only with the V-6. A rear-hinged third door is standard on the driver’s side of extended-cab versions. Chevrolet also offers regular-cab models and a Crew Cab body, which has four full-size front-hinged doors. GMC’s Sonoma is closely related to the S-10.

For 2004, the new Colorado midsize pickup will replace the S-10, which has a long history in Chevrolet’s truck lineup.

Exterior
Chevrolet’s compact pickup is offered in four configurations. Regular-cab models have a 6-foot cargo bed, come only with 2WD, measure 190.1 inches long overall and ride a 108.3-inch wheelbase. The 2WD regular-cab Long Box S-10 rides a 117.9-inch wheelbase and stretches to 206.1 inches long overall. Extended-cab models also have a 6-foot bed but are offered with either 2WD or 4WD. Crew Cab 4×4 models have a 4.5-foot bed. Extended-cab and Crew Cab pickups are 204.8 inches long overall with a 122.9-inch wheelbase.

Sporty exterior packages attract younger buyers. The Xtreme Sport Suspension Package imparts a low-rider look with a ride height that’s 2 inches lower than normal. Said to be “for those who want to turn heads as they zip down the road,” the Xtreme pickups are fitted with 270-degree ground-effects body components and a front air dam with fog lamps. Striping is optional. The ZR2 Wide Stance offroad package for the extended-cab 4×4 has “ZR2” decals and includes Bilstein shocks, 31-inch on-/offroad tires and extra-wide argent wheel flares. A new ZR5 option for Crew Cab trucks includes black aluminum bed rails, side steps, a roof rack and wheel flares.

Interior
Regular-cab models seat two or three occupants, extended cabs hold three or four people, and Crew Cabs are built for five passengers. Seating choices include bucket seats, a three-place front bench in either vinyl or cloth and a split front bench with a folding center armrest. Extended-cab models add a folding rear jump seat. Crew Cab models have two front buckets and a three-place rear bench seat. Air conditioning and a tachometer are standard.

Under the Hood
2WD pickups have a standard 120-horsepower, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Most buyers choose the 4.3-liter Vortec V-6, which is standard in 4WD models. The V-6 produces 180 hp in the 2WD installation and 190 hp with 4WD. A five-speed-manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional, but Crew Cab models come with the automatic gearbox only.

Crew Cab models come only with the Insta-Trac 4WD system, which allows push-button shifting between 2WD and 4WD on the move.

Safety
Dual front airbags, antilock brakes and daytime running lights are standard.

  • Love this little truck

I bought it used and looked into numbers that this little 03 S10 has a regular LS step side extended body , it caught my eye because it had a SS hood and a Extreme front and back bumpers. After buying it i looked up numbers to find out that it has a SS drive train along with possi, and a Extreme chasse . Love that parts are everywhere.

  • Love my S10!

I got my 03 S10 in 2018 with only 49k miles on it from the original owner and i absolutely love it! It has 75k miles on it now but still runs the same as the day i bought it. With the leer fiberglass bed cover and dual Flowmaster pipes it definitely stands out from the others even though its the LS model 2wd single cab but with the 4.3 vortec it gets up and goes just fine. I baby her though lol, ive only done regular routine maintenance like oil changes, clean the k&n air filter, fuel filter, transmission and coolant flush. Things you have to do for every car/truck but other than that i haven't done anything and it just runs like a top. Never left me stranded and has always fired right up like it's brand new. I gotta say its not the best road trip truck but no one buys a s10 for long trips lol back and forth to work and errands around town i couldn't be happier! I definitely trust it for long trips but im 6'1 so it gets pretty uncomfortable after 4 or 5 hours of continuous driving so we just use our Toyota camry for trips. Gas mileage is average i suppose, 17-19 mpg so im not complaining. I have nothing but great things to say about this truck! I get compliments almost every time i drive it so thats a plus lol. If you can pick a s10 up im sure you won't regret it!

  • Workhorse at a value price.

I got a lot of things accomplished with this truck. I found that you really don't need a full size truck to accomplish 99.9% of the work that a regular family requires. I hauled brush moved refrigerators and completed home renovations out of this truck. Very happy with it.

  • For a step down vehicle, pretty dang good

Is a “step down“ vehicle, from a Chevy Silverado, stepside, five speed owner to my S-10 was hard, but good truck with no major problems…YET.

  • Very reliable and durable truck!

Owned my truck for 10 years and no major issues, still runs strong with average maintenance upkeep. Serves it purpose as light truck to meet my demands as I dont quite need a mid or full size truck.

  • Amazing.

It has excellent gas mileage. I haven't had any problems with it since the head gasket was replaced. It lasted at least 126,000 miles on the odometer before needing repair.

  • Very reliable. Personally maintained thru 18 ye.

At 82, I have owned many vehicles. THIS little truck is quiet, comfortable economical, easily maintained and good looking...like its owner! I would buy another if I find a low mileage unit since this is approaching end of 300,000 KM....no engine, transmission or power train probs. Brakes I have replaced at 210 000km. Great value. Love it.

  • Never buy a 2003 Chevy S-10

This piece of Chevy art work is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. As soon as I remove the engine, tranny, AC and radiator out of to sell on Craigslist. I am going to take it to the junk yard to have it cubed so that the new prez of chebby can place it on her desk in Mexico!

  • Extremely reliable and keeps its value

This is an absolutely amazing truck. I've had it since 2004 and only a handful of mechanical issues (alternator, radiator, fuel pump, gaskets) during that entire time. It is so comfortable and easy to drive. In love with it.
