Great car for the money

Bought this used about 4 yrs ago, took it to Albuq.New Meixco, got 32 miles per gallon. No mechanical problems, just recently had to replace fan that is the front of the radiator, nothing more. Runs great, and drives good in Mn. Alot of people that see it,really like it.

I don't understand the negaive reviews, mine A+

Bought mine used from a dealer as a mechanics special, got a great price replaced the power steering pump, and suspension part in back that goes bad and that was at 155k. At 199 almost 200k the timing belt went out literally (I never did replace it as I should have at the recommended 125K). Tore into engine expecting it to be thrashed, and found it is a "zero tolerance built engine" which means no valves hit pistons when timing belt broke, put in new belt and she works like a charm. 204, ooo miles, a little rust, took care of it. Its a great car and I routinely get 23 mpg with even mix of street and hwy. Honest truth, it is fun, nicely designed pretty easy to work on cause of engineering even with tight engine compartment. I love it, even have a hitch and tow my atv around with it. Parts are hard to find in junk yard cause there are very few being scrapped!

Nice looking cars but very unreliable

I've owned a 2001 PT Cruiser for about 3 1/2 years now and have had a lot of problems with it. It's been a nice car, drives nice, looks nice, but ive put more money into it than its worth. I've had to replace the tie-rod ends after my front wheel came loose and turned back into my fender. I've had numerous electrical problems such as light malfunctions. The worst thing was the powertrain control module dying and ruining 2 speed sensors and the wires to it. Another issue is the chrome wheels. The tires will not completely seal around the wheels (ive put several different kinds on it). I have to put air in the tires every two weeks.

cute but junk

Milage way lower than estimated 17-20. Not made for country roads. No durability. Way too many repairs needed.

I guess my favorite car ever

I love my PT. Her name is Eleanor, she has a custom paint job and she's beautiful. She is also a real workhorse. She has amazing cargo space, has always been completely dependable, gets good mileage, has 148,000 miles on her, and is fun to drive. If they're still making PT's when she gives up the ghost, I'll buy another.

Surprising Mileage, 28+

Yes, sometimes 30mpg, avg 25. Learning to drive economically is key. Coast when possible, in neutral, not in gear, at top of great long hills, naturally. Go gently from stop, no gunning, jack-rabbit starts. Careful assessment of up-coming red lights and stop signs to come to a gentle stop, not panic last second 'stomping'. No racing or long idling. Many ways to alter mileage by driving habits. when Purch used @44k mi now 79k, 6cyl., Yes - 6cyl= 30mpg.

Reliable/versitle/inexpensive/good all round trans

I have burned up many cars over the years traveling in my job as sales rep. Do not think you can find a better combination of usefulness, reliability, and total cost of operation than buying a PT. Especially if you opt for buying one pre owned. overall a great buy! Bought mine for $10K with 10K miles on it and loaded. It has 120K on it now and still looks, runs and drives like it did when I bought it. Have to agree with the one negative it has is a wide turning radius. I think I can live with it.

Chronic problems

We have owned our PT Cruiser for about five years. As noted in other reviews, this vehicle has a large turning radius for the size of the car,and is not very economical with regard to fuel consumption. We have had to relace what a service parts employee termed the "thumper," a part of the rear end suspension that was apparently notorious for failure and a recognized design glitch. Our big problem has been intermittent noisy steering as the system regurgitates P/S fluid in cold weather upon start-up. It does not do this in warm weather. We have taken the vehicle to dealerships and private mechanics and the problem persists - it has done this since we bought it with varying degrees of severity. Now it has been recommnended taht we replace the steering rack, as the sytsem may be "drawing" air upon startup from some part of the steering system. There seems to be no answer to what precisely is causing this problem, and I'm reluctant to keep "trying" fixes only to discover it doesn't solve the problem. We will be looking for another car soon.

Longest I've ever loved a car

I ordered an original 01 PT sight unseen except the picture in a magazine. Had to wait 9 months to get it and have enjoyed every minute of it. I was the first on my block to have a PT Cruiser and it was a real head turner.
