Vehicle Overview
Ford’s traditional full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan saw only modest changes for the 2006 model year. An in-glass antenna replaces the former mast, and a perimeter alarm is newly optional. New nine-spoke 16-inch wheels go on LX models, and a trip computer is standard on LX and LX Sport sedans. All Crown Victorias are powered by a 4.6-liter V-8.

Built in Canada, Ford’s biggest sedan has earned five-star ratings for both front occupants in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration frontal-impact crash tests. Mercury offers the similar Grand Marquis with additional features and a higher price. These two are the last remaining examples of moderately priced, rear-drive, full-size sedans.

The Crown Victoria is offered in Standard, LX and LX Sport trim levels. An LX Premier Group option package incorporates certain features of the LX Sport. Heavy-duty Crown Victorias for police and taxi use come in standard or extended-wheelbase form.

Exterior
Styling features include wide door openings, wraparound aero headlights and color-keyed bodyside moldings. Riding a 114.6-inch wheelbase, the four-door sedan is 212 inches long overall and 58.3 inches tall.

Standard wheels measure 16 inches in diameter, but the LX Sport sedan gets 17-inch tires on aluminum wheels, a Handling and Performance package and a monochromatic exterior. Automatic-leveling rear air springs are installed on the LX Sport.

Interior
Five or six people fit inside the Crown Victoria, depending on whether a bench or bucket seats are installed up front. Standard and LX models feature the front bench for a six-person capacity. An overhead console is standard in the LX and LX Sport models. The sedan’s trunk holds 20.6 cubic feet of cargo, and a trunk organizer is offered as an option. A power moonroof is optional on the LX and LX Sport models.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt steering column, a cassette stereo, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Remote keyless entry, electronic climate control and a CD stereo are installed in the LX sedan. The LX Sport adds a cassette/CD stereo, leather-trimmed power bucket seats, a floor-mounted gearshift lever and a full-length center console. Power-adjustable pedals are optional.

Under the Hood
In Standard and LX trims, the Crown Victoria’s 4.6-liter V-8 produces 224 horsepower and 272 pounds-feet of torque and drives a four-speed-automatic transmission. Optional all-speed traction control uses the antilock braking system and throttle intervention to manage wheelspin. A more potent 239-hp version of the V-8, featuring a dual exhaust system, is standard in the LX Sport.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are standard. A dual-rate brake booster applies full braking power automatically in a panic stop. Side-impact airbags are optional.

Driving Impressions
Though the past two model years have seen the introduction of other rear-drive models, relatively few choices are available for drivers who seek rear-drive motoring at a moderate cost. Fortunately, the Crown Vic yields a generally pleasant experience, led by an easygoing ride. As long as you don’t expect sharp handling, this sedan can be a sensible purchase, though it’s bigger than most people need.

  • I’ll never own another car!

My 2006 is coming up on 17 years and 155,000. No major mechanical issues, ever! My mechanic said it’s not even breathing hard yet. At age 65, I’ll die before the car does. I told my wife to bury me in it. No matter which way I go, I’ll have a comfortable ride getting there.

  • Will accomplish what I bought it for and more

I was planning on going Land Speed Racing on a paved Standing Mile under the sanction of the East Coast Timing Association. I needed a car capable of running 135-138 MPH in a Standing Mile and be reliable enough to drive from 50 miles west of Atlanta to Blytheville, Ar. With myself, my Brother and a friend and all of our gear for a four day trip. I researched the Crown Vic PO71 Police Interceptor which came with 30 more HP than a standard Crown Vic. It has a heavy duty transmission with a transmission cooler, a 3” aluminum driveshaft, a 3:55 to 1:00 Positraction rear end, heavy duty shocks and sway bars. For reliability I had the transmission drained and serviced, oil and filter changed and The differential drained and synthetic filled with synthetic grease. For Performance I had a 90 MM Throttle Body installed, and a Cold Air Induction Kit, 30,000 Volt Plug Coils and new Triple Platnum Spark Plugs. I had Stainless Steel Drilled and Slotted Brake Rotors with Ceramic Brake Pads installed. My Brother Barry did the Throttle Body, Cold Air Induction and the brake work in addition to installing two Racing Bucket Seats in front and I installed a center console. I had W Rated performance tires installed then for reliability I had new front wheel bearings and rear Axle Seals installed. Someone remOved two Catalitic Convertors and the factory mufflers and Installed two Flowmaster40 Mufflers existing in front of the rear tire on each side. All rubber hoses, radiator hoses and clamps were replaced. Lastly that car was carried to Moes S’peed Shop in Hiram Ga. for a Computerized Tuneup. It should be making around 340 BHP.

  • FORD CROWN VIC POLICE INTERCEPTOR GREAT CAR!!!

LOTS OF ROOM, SUPER SMOOTH, AND HAS POWER! V8 Cylinder and radio system which is super loud and the car absorbs bumps very nicely because of the weight of this car - its a heavy car!

  • Loving my Crown Vic

I inherited my crown vic from my uncle in Sparks, Nevada. This gargantuan beauty can MOVE, but boy does she like to drink (averaging 15mph in the city). My sister likes to remind me of her Cavalier's 30mpg on the freeway, and in exchange, I always enjoy reminding her of the Cavalier's heat-cracked dash, and the fact that in the same amount of time it took her to throw $1,500 in repairs into her car from wear n' tear, I still haven't put a penny into repairing my ford...because I've never needed to. Unlike Californian Vics, mine had the spotlight, and push bumper pulled off, and the interior is some sort of rugged plastic. Even so, the adjustable lumbar support, sheer amount of space, and overall sense of quality construction makes for a very comfy ride; quite, too! The trunk is ridiculous; my parents own 2 Saturns ('01 SL1, and '04 Ion) Each car holds only a smidgen over half as much as the Crown Vic. Mine now has 114,361 miles on it, and runs like a dream. At this rate 228,722 isn't even a question, this car is solid.

  • Yes, it's a Cop Car! And it's Mine!

This 2006 Police Interceptor is the real deal. Featuring the Street Appearance package, it closely mirrors a standard Vic. The interior matched the standard except there's no power seats and there's an AM FM cassette for "entertainment". Mechanically, at 61K miles, the vehicle is solid. No noises, rattles or anything. Fuel economy? What's that? 16 mpg around town and 23 on the highway. Not bad. My 2003 Impala doesn't do much better. I love the rumble of the v8 and rear wheel drive. This car rides tight, hugs the road and feels safe. They'll start disappearing soon as Ford killed the Vic. If you find a good deal as I did, grab one. You won't be sorry. This car is my third find via Cars.Com.

  • Wonderful riding car

This is one of the last well made highway cars on the market today in my opinion. This car is excellent for long trips for the comfort and ease of handling. I recommend this vehicle to anyone. the gas milage is suprizing for the large V-8 motor but it gets 26 MPG on the highway. There is power to spare when needed to pass on the two lane roads where I live in Mississippi. I insist on not buying imported cars and am glad Ford is making such a good dependable vehicle today.
