Explore the 1991 Ford Explorer

most rugged suv out there

got it in 2001 with 86,XXX miles, the guy said it had transmission problems. but after i flushed the transmission it ran fine. it now has 304,XXX miles on it. original transmission and engine, runs and shifts like a dream. unstoppable 4x4 in snow, or off road. wouldnt trade it for anything. downside: 12 mpg during winter and it eats up break pads like crazy. but if you grease the pins well the caliper slides easier. and im now on my 3rd pair of window motors. other than that, it starts every time and is very dependable.

OK vehicle

I bought a 1991 Explorer that was fully loaded. The A/C didn't work, the power locks and power window gears all 4 quit working, the power mirrors didn't work, the power back hatch latch didn't work, the cruise control didn't work so basically - nothing worked except the engine and transmission. After 204K the engine finally gave up the ghost. Gas milage was about 16 mpg highway for a 6v 2 wd manual. That really stinks for a plain jane engine.

first new vehicle purchase

I bought the 2wd 4dr version in 1990 and drove it for the next 18yrs(175,000 miles) with few issues other then a blown head gasket and transmission failure. Other than that no complaints. It served the family well and I found it hard to part with.
