Explore the 2002 Ford Explorer

5andcounting

Today I spent $2,200 on a rebuilt transmission, the first substantial additional expenditure since I purchased this car. Do a search on 2002 Explorers--there are a ton of people that have had transmission problems and ABS problems--that was $50. My SUV has 130K, I've replaced tires, brakes and do my own oil changes. I'm NOT one of those people that degrade Ford products, this is the 5th new Ford in a row that I've purchased and will buy another in the future.

Great for the money

I am the original owner of a 2002 Ford XLT Explorer with a little over 100K miles on it, and I have taken great care of this car from the beginning and have had only minor issues with it. I do take it to Ford once a year for normal maintenance, which usually costs under $500.00 to keep it in great working condition. I was going to trade it in last year for a new Ford Edge, but the Edge is too small and I decided I didn't want a car payment anyway! My Ford is big, a 7-seater, for my daughter and all her friends, our dogs and our ski trips, and I always have enough room for our gear; bikes, skiis, snowboards, dog crates, groceries, etc. That's very important with our life style. I would recommend this car to anyone. Try one if you need room, reliability, value and low car maintenance.

Don't Buy the "Exploder"!

Pain in the butt car, everything is wrong with it all the time. Routinely does not start. If it's cold outside, forget it, you're driving something else. Engine is too small for the size of the car. Electrical problems as well. The seat is extremely uncomfortable. It is also too big to drive in cities. The fact that driving it is like riding in a big lumbering dinosaur is the least of your problems with this car.

Reliable like a hole in your pocket

The 2002 Explorer is my second. My first was a nice ride until total melt down at 125000 and 14 years old... so I replaced it with a newer model. To my disapointment Ive had many break-down and replacement issues. Starters, window motors, electrical boards, auto transmission, fuel pump, wheel bearings have all failed under light use (and under 100,000mi), all of these problems were mirrored by horrible service at my local Ford dealership. (I now have a much better mechanic saving me tons of $) Anyways I still like the Explorer's size, comfort, and styling. The engine power is good, 4x4 is OK, and fuel economeny better than expected. Sometimes I think my dog likes the car more than I do.

Great Car! Very Few Problems!!

I bought this 2002 Ford Explorer in 2007 with 60,000 Miles. Great Car. I have only had some problems with the Rear Differential and the transmission was recently rebuilt, but overall, the car is Fantastic! I can take my kids in it and they both have their own rows! It is also great for road trips, with the towing package, too!!

love it

I bought my 02 Explorer in 05 with 37k miles. It now has over 105k miles. I love this truck! Other thn your usual Oil, brake pads and your other usual wear and tear stuff, this truck has given me no problem. I am now ready to upgrade to a 08 Explorer. I love the new look, so trust me! If you need a quality car with a nice look to it, i think any explorer will do for you. Welcome to the Ford Family!

Good SUV

I purchased this vehicle new in 2001, but it is a 2002 model. The only negative thing I can say is that it had fewer features than the 1996 model I replaced though I paid a similar price. It is a truck like vehicle, which I like. I am not interested in a car-like SUV. I need a rugged vehicle with towing capacity. My Explorer fit the bill. I've never had mechanical issues. I have owned it since new so it has been well cared for and never abused. I now have more than 130,000 miles on it. Our other car is a Toyota Camry. I care about fuel efficiency. For a truck-like vehicle, the Ford Explorer is okay.

It's Okay...

We bought this while expecting our 3rd child. While it does comfortably fit all of us very well, I don't enjoy driving this SUV. It feels very much like a bulky truck. We live in an urban area, and I find it hard to get around sometimes in parking lots and some narrow streets/parking. Visibility is poor. We have a 2002, which we bought used in 2009. Since we purchased it lots of little things are starting to break. CD player, side mirror, and the vents are malfunctioning. The value is good, it's average. It'll get us through until we can afford something that is more comfortable to drive around a city, and easier to maneuver.

Great Vehicle for Summer and Winter in North East

I've owned one for a few years now. It has had it's maintenance needed, but nothing out of control - usual truck care. It runs soundly and it's a great truck. Only selling now because I'm moving far south. Would recommend for anyone in need of a comfortable truck with a little luxury/creature comforts to it.

GREAT CAR, LOW MAINTENANCE AND DEPENDABLE

I bought my car with 38,000 miles on it it now has 110,000, and looks and drives like a new one. The thing to make sure is to keep the maintenance items up to date and it will run and run reliably. I have to say that it was great car to own with just the standard stuff to do at the 30,000 miles checks, to keep it running well. Use synthetic oil, change the fluids on schedule and change the plugs to keeps it running smoothly. Great car to own, I would buy another as soon as I can afford it.
