Expert 2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
The Explorer Sport Trac has a pickup bed in back where most SUVs would have an enclosed cargo area. The Explorer Sport Trac seats five and is available in XLT and Limited trim levels. Its competitors include crew cab pickups such as the Honda Ridgeline, Dodge Dakota quad cab and Nissan Frontier crew cab.

The Explorer Sport Trac adapts an independent rear suspension from the Explorer— a setup that usually trades off-road capability for on-road handling ability — that’s only matched by the Ridgeline.

New for 2010
There are no significant changes for 2010.

Exterior
The Explorer Sport Trac wears the same slatted grille and scalloped headlights as the Explorer, but adds nearly 17 inches in length to accommodate a 4.5-foot pickup bed replete with side rails, tie-down hooks, a composite liner and three in-floor storage containers.

  • Available 16-, 17-, 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Standard power mirrors
  • Standard power-sliding rear window
  • Optional keypad entry
  • Optional heated mirrors
  • Optional automatic headlamps
  • Optional moonroof

Interior
Dashboard components mimic the Explorer: A tall center stack has radio controls above the air vents and connects to a floor-mounted console box below. Front bucket seats and a second-row bench provide seating for up to five.

  • Standard air conditioning
  • Standard leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls
  • Standard power windows and locks
  • Optional Sync system
  • Optional voice-activated navigation system

Under the Hood
Like the Ridgeline, the Explorer Sport Trac has an independent rear suspension, which is rare for a truck. When properly equipped, the rear-wheel-drive V-8-powered Explorer Sport Trac can tow up to 7,160 pounds.

  • 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 with 254 pounds-feet of torque
  • 292-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 with 315 pounds-feet of torque
  • Five- (V-6) or six-speed automatic (V-8)
  • Available 4×2 and 4×4 driveline options for both engines

Safety
Standard trailer-sway control works with the stability system to either apply the brakes or adjust engine response to help keep the trailer in line. Other safety features include:

  • Standard front side-impact airbags
  • Standard side curtain airbags
  • Standard electronic stability control
  • Standard four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Optional reverse sensing system
  • Optional power-adjustable pedals

  • Way better than my 2013 f150 and 2008 Ford ranger!

Im in the market for a 2010 explorer ST( sport trac ) . I had a 2007 and it was a tank. Loved it, pulling a 12 foot trailer full of logs and branches with no problems . V6 is powerful enough to tow anything you will need. It’s roomy and stylish. Love them !!

  • 2010 Ford Explorer Sportrac paint problems.

Overall a great truck. Outstanding performance and comfort in a very reliable truck. However the paint hasn't held up over the years on the edges of the hood & roof side seems. Not happy with the clear coat and trim. Still an awesome daily driver.

  • Ok But Not Great

I have the Adrenalin model of Sport Trac, that up to this day has been reliable. The exterior design is one get I get a lot of stares and compliments, as it is a visually a very rare model. Interior is good but not great, premium stereo is not good at all! Mechanically speaking, is just on par with an econobox car, but gas thirst is huge with the V8! Acceleration is below par for V8’s size and rating. Transmission shift smooth with the occasional bump in lower gears now and then. All in all, it’s an ok vehicle but I wouldn’t recommend for longer trips, due to marginal power, and fuel guzzling habits!

  • Fantastic SUV/Truck.

Bought my 2001 Sport Trac shortly after they came out. Great SUV/Truck. Keep it until 2010 with 128,000 miles and traded it in on a used 2010 Sport Trac Adrenaline Package. I still have it with 89000 miles. Will definitely buy a New one as soon as they bring them back out.

  • Very happy with my new to me truck

I have always wanted a four door truck and often considered the Sport track. I looked and almost bought a f150 crew cab but it wasn’t in great condition and I am so glad it didn’t work out because I have found the one in this Sport Track.

  • Had for 7 years

Car met all of my needs at the time and more. Wanted a small 4x4 truck with decent MPG and loved the styling of it. Repairs made over the years include wheel bearing and sensor on 1 side and AC Clutch. Other than that small issues with water leaking in through the roof where the roof rack attaches but Flex Seal fixed it. Was my daily driver until have our 4th child. Comfortably fit 2 adults and 3 kids in the back with lots of storage in bed with the cover. I have been impressed with the durability of the tonneau cover. Interior design could have been more functional and was basic for 2010. No bells and whistles I would say.

  • The Adrenalin still turns heads

Sport Trac Adrenalin has been a perfect suburban family vehicle. Room for the kids and a dog. Comfortable heated leather buckets for mom and dad. More cargo utility than any van or SUV. I’ve hauled a bed full of baby gear to grandma’s house, a bed full of mulch for landscape work at home, and a bed full of luggage and beach supplies for a vacation with friends. It has enough power with the V8, enough traction with AWD, and great reliability during my ownership. And even at 10 years old, it still gets lots of attention at the gas station, the park, and the grocery store. Just yesterday, someone asked me if was a 2020 model. “Why does it look so different?” He wondered. I dig the Sport Trac Adrenalin lifestyle. They should have kept making this thing.

  • Excellent shape and runs great.

I wish Ford still made the Explorer Sport Trac. Roomy interior in a pick up truck. Hard Tonneau cover with locks keeps stuff safe in the bed, and removes easily to haul larger items. Great vehicle!
