Tough, Durable, Dependable
After years of owning Volkswagens, I was convinced I'd never find more durable, reliable vehicles. That changed when I gave a guy $7000 for my Cherokee Sport seven years ago. At the time it had 97,000 miles on it. It now has over 170,000....and all I've had to do is change the oil twice a year and buy new tires! There are no leaks anywhere on the engine, transmission, transfer case or axle. And to be honest, I'm no maintenance nut...this thing does not make regular trips to Jeep folks for preventive maintenance (although I must admit I finally took it to a lube place once to have all fluids checked, just in case). With its 4X4 it is great in the snow, the 6-cylinder engine is plenty potent, all power locks and windows still operate flawlessly, the gas mileage is decent, and the AC is very cold. It's old enough that I don't baby it when banging around the back roads on fishing and hunting trips. And it cleans up very nicely! The only con is that I sometimes have to swat the underside of the steering column to get it started (my xxxxxxx anti-theft device). Beyone that it's better than the Energizer Bunny. I would not hesitate to buy another, even one with high miles. Why can't all manufacturers build vehicles like these? And why in the world did Jeep discontinue this one?

Its a shame jeeps still aren't built this way.
I have researched this vehicle extensively since I have owned it. If you can find a Jeep Cherokee(xj) that has been well cared for BUY IT!!! Mine has the 4.0L high output bulletproof engine paired with the extra durable AW4 transmission. I have about 140,000 miles on mine and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it to California tomorrow. It shows no sign of wear in the way it runs or sounds. The 4x4 system has gotten me out of a lot of tough situations out in the country where I reside. Its a shame that they do not use the 4.0L motor anymore. I am getting ready to graduate college in the next year. I wanted to purchase a new vehicle, but I have decided to look for the same Jeep with less miles, or possibly drop a new factory motor in mine when it dies. I LOVE THIS VEHICLE!!!!!!!!

This is my third jeep cherokee
Not only has each jeep been very reliable but my mechanics are awesome! I have had minimal surprises, in terms of repair, and the cost of repair hasn't been outrageous. My only concern is the miles per gallon isn't great.

Has over 250,000
This isnt my car its my dads and he lets me drive it. the car has over 250,000 miles and is still running strong the only problems are that the rear defroster doesnt work sometimes and the pop the keep the door from swinging open too wide comes out occasionanly but we just hammer it back in. sometimes the gauges will die and none will read but to fix it all you have to do is tap the gauge cluster. the rear seat is a little tight so its better for kids but im only 5'4" and it can get sorta tight but i ask my sister to scoot up and she does. the AC is extremely cold and the rear gets cold with the rear AC. i recently broke the hatch because i threw my sweat shirt back there and it locked on it but we fixed it. the 4WD is really god but if the snow is real deep and hugs the wheels than its harder to get out. the one thing that is awesome about this car are the brakes i would expect brakes on jeeps to be kinda iffy but these are amazing i wish jeep still made this car our jeep has the original 4.0 inline 6 with 190 hp its not a sports car for sure but it gets the job done and with regular oil changes and check ups and all around service the engine has never broken down and is lasting a long 260,000 miles but we wont buy another jeep unless it has the 4.0 I6 becuase we have relatives who have newer jeeps and they say that since chrylser has put there engines in the new jeeps they brake down all the time. sad to say but we wont buy a new one but the older ones yes

"By far, greatst jeep I ever owned!"
I own a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4X4, and it is one of the best vehicles in terms of simplicity and reliability I ever owned. I have owned 2 older Jeep Cherokees, a 1982 Cherokee Chief, and a 1991 Cherokee Limited. The older Cherokees were good for thier time, but the 1999 Cherokee is superior, in the sense that the 4.0 litre staight 6 is a very simple and easy motor to work on and maintain. And, the body of the truck is a nice modernized rendition of its predecessor, excluding the negatives and strenghening the positives of aspects. The front driver and passenger interior is comfortable for the truck's size, and there is plenty of cargo space in the hatch area, which is very convenient! This tuck is also great for towing up to 4,000 pounds, since the 1997 to 2001 Jeep Cherokees have a better transmission then in previous years. On terms of feul economy, I get about 19 city and 24 highway, which isn't too bad for the size of the engine. My truck has over 115,000 miles on it, and it has yet to dissappiont me! I would stongly recomend this vehicle to any one from a new driver, to the most experienced driver, because you won't regret owning a Jeep Cherokee!

Awesome!
What can I say, it's a Jeep! Great in the snow, great off road, and a great commuter. Gas mileage isn't the best, but it is 4wd afterall! I have owned mine for 6 years and have had NO issues with it. Very dependable. Lots of get up and go with the 6 cylinder engine, infinity stero is great, features are great compared to other SUV's in its class. Fold flat rear seat enables flexible storage options.

Love my Jeep for snow and sand!
I have a 4-Liter straight 6 automatic. It's great for towing and offroading and with all the options: keyless entry, cruise, etc. it's fun to drive everywhere. Replaced the compressor on the AC recently ($costly), now the evaporator has a leak. Not worth the cost to repair. Other than that, I'm very happy with it. Get's me through snow over sand and the occasional curb. I take my Jeep places most other girls don't even think of.

Good first car
There are some good features in the Jeep. The Jeep has 4WD and is good for areas where it might snow. The car is good for transporting things. However, the fuel economy is bad, 13-15 mpg, the sound system is extremely weak and the 4WD doesn't always work on ice ( I had a spinout with the 4WD on with little ice on the road). Good first car, but there are cars that are safer and have better fuel economy.
